Silver Dollar City opened in 1960 at the mouth of Marvel Cave — the deep limestone cavern that had drawn Ozark tourists since the 1890s — as a re-created mining town where craftsmen worked the old ways. Sixty-plus years on, it has grown into one of America's most acclaimed theme parks while keeping that founding identity intact: more than 100 resident craftsmen still blow glass, throw pots, forge iron, and pull taffy along its shaded hollows, and every admission still includes a guided tour down into Marvel Cave's cathedral room.

The rides, meanwhile, compete with anyone's. Time Traveler is the world's fastest, steepest full-circuit spinning coaster; Outlaw Run was the first wooden coaster with a double-barrel roll; Wildfire, Powder Keg, and Thunderation round out a coaster lineup that enthusiasts travel for; Mystic River Falls claims the tallest raft-ride drop in the western hemisphere. Fire in the Hole — the park's beloved indoor coaster — was reborn in 2024 in a new, bigger building. Families get a full kids' district (Fireman's Landing), and the cinnamon bread and skillet meals are non-negotiable traditions.

The calendar is festival-driven: Bluegrass & BBQ in spring, Moonlight Madness summer nights, the Harvest Festival's pumpkin nights in fall, and An Old Time Christmas from early November — 6.5 million lights, a nightly light parade, Broadway-quality holiday shows, and the 8-story Joy on Town Square tree. The park runs a seasonal calendar (generally mid-March through December 30, dark midwinter) — check dates before you plan. It sits about 20 minutes west of the Highway 76 strip, above Table Rock Lake.

What to Expect

Format

A full-scale theme park styled as an 1880s Ozark town — world-class coasters and water rides, working craftsmen, live shows, festival food, a kids' district, and a guided Marvel Cave tour included with admission.

Best Time

Weekdays outside summer peak. Spring and fall festivals hit the sweet spot of weather and crowds; November-December for An Old Time Christmas is the park at its most magical (and busiest on weekends).

Duration

A full day — two days in festival seasons if you want the cave tour, shows, and every coaster without rushing.

Tips

Buy tickets online ahead. Arrive at opening and run to Time Traveler or Mystic River Falls first. The Marvel Cave tour is included but takes about an hour — late afternoon is the quiet window. Do not leave without cinnamon bread. The park is built on a hillside; wear real shoes. Christmas-season evenings sell out parking — come early and stay through the light parade.

⚡ Quick Picks

Best For

Everyone — it's the rare park that genuinely serves grandparents watching glassblowers and teenagers riding Outlaw Run in the same afternoon.

Families

The whole point. Fireman's Landing for little ones, big coasters for teens, crafts and shows for every age in between.

Couples

Festival evenings — Moonlight Madness summer nights or a Christmas light-parade date — are quietly great.

Pair With

The Showboat Branson Belle (same owners, combo tickets often available) or a Table Rock Lake afternoon down the hill.

Time Needed

One full day minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Silver Dollar City open year-round?

No — it runs a seasonal calendar, generally mid-March through December 30, with the heaviest schedule in summer and the Christmas season. It's dark in January and February. Check the official calendar before planning.

Is the cave tour really included?

Yes — a guided tour of Marvel Cave, the deep limestone cavern the park was built over, is included with every admission. It's about an hour with roughly 600 stairs; a tram brings you back up.

How do the coasters compare to big-name parks?

Seriously well. Time Traveler and Outlaw Run are nationally ranked, and the overall lineup punches far above the park's size. Enthusiasts make pilgrimages here.

What is An Old Time Christmas?

The park's November-December festival — 6.5 million lights, a nightly illuminated parade, an 8-story musical tree, and full-scale holiday productions. It's regularly voted America's best theme-park Christmas event.

How far is it from the Branson strip?

About 20-30 minutes west of Highway 76 via Highway 376 or the Shepherd of the Hills Expressway, in the hills above Table Rock Lake.
